Subject: Opposition to School Voucher Programs
I am writing to express my strong opposition to school voucher programs and urge you to reject any legislation that diverts public education funds to private schools. As a concerned constituent, I believe vouchers undermine our public education system, reduce accountability, and fail to provide equitable opportunities for all students.
My primary concerns include:
1. Diverting Public Funds from Public Schools – Public schools serve the vast majority of students, yet voucher programs redirect taxpayer dollars away from these institutions, often benefiting private and religious schools that are not subject to the same transparency and accountability standards. Our priority should be strengthening public education, not weakening it.
2. Lack of Accountability and Oversight – Unlike public schools, private schools receiving voucher funds are not required to meet the same educational standards, provide services for students with disabilities, or follow anti-discrimination protections. This creates an uneven playing field and leaves many students without adequate support.
3. Failure to Improve Student Outcomes – Studies in multiple states have shown that students using vouchers often perform no better—or even worse—than their public school counterparts. Instead of investing in an unproven system, we should focus on funding evidence-based programs that benefit all students.
I urge you to stand with the majority of families who rely on strong public schools and oppose any efforts to expand school voucher programs in our state. Instead, I encourage policies that fully fund public education, support teachers, and provide all students—regardless of background—with the quality education they deserve.
Thank you for your time and your commitment to serving our community. I look forward to your response and to seeing you advocate for policies that strengthen public education.
