I am writing to urge you to support immediate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump for threatening military action against Greenland, a territory of Denmark and our NATO ally. The White House confirmed on Tuesday that the administration is actively exploring options to acquire Greenland and that military action remains a possibility. This represents a dangerous abuse of presidential power that violates our treaty obligations and threatens the foundation of the NATO alliance. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that acquiring Greenland is a national security priority, while senior aide Stephen Miller questioned Denmark's right to claim the territory and asserted that no one would fight the US militarily over Greenland's future. In March, Trump told Congress regarding Greenland: "I think we're going to get it. One way or the other, we're going to get it." This is an explicit threat of military force against a democratic ally. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen warned that a US military attack on Greenland could effectively end NATO. Leaders from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, Britain, and Denmark issued a joint statement affirming that Greenland belongs to its people and that Arctic security must be achieved collectively with NATO allies. Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen and Republican Sen. Thom Tillis, co-chairs of the bipartisan Senate NATO Observer Group, stated that any suggestion of coercing a NATO ally undermines the principles of self-determination that the Alliance exists to defend. Threatening military action against a NATO ally to seize territory constitutes a high crime that demands congressional accountability. The President has no authority to unilaterally invade allied nations, and doing so would violate international law, our NATO treaty obligations, and the constitutional separation of powers. I urge you to support impeachment proceedings immediately to prevent this reckless and illegal course of action.
