For a year now, the Trump administration has been trying to kill a nearly 60-year-old program that provides birth control, cancer screenings, and STI testing to millions of Americans. The program is called Title X. It was championed by then-Congressman George H.W. Bush, signed into law by President Nixon in 1970, and passed the Senate unanimously. It was entirely uncontroversial for decades. And this administration has tried every tool it has to shut it down.
Title X has served tens of millions of Americans over its nearly 60-year history. It was created by a Republican president, championed by a future Republican president, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, and for most of its existence, it was not a partisan issue. It became one only when a regressive movement that views women's independence as a threat decided to make it one.
I am demanding that HHS immediately award a one-year full funding extension to all current Title X grantees and urge your members of Congress to support the call made by 128 House members and 38 senators.
