The proposed legislation to abolish the U.S. Department of Education would undermine efforts to provide equal educational opportunities for all students across the country. Moving the administration of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to the Department of Health and Human Services could weaken the oversight and enforcement of critical protections and services for students with disabilities. Additionally, the redistribution of funding through block grants without considering factors like poverty levels would disproportionately impact students from disadvantaged backgrounds who rely on targeted federal resources. Dismantling the department risks eroding the progress made in ensuring access to quality education for all students, regardless of their circumstances or needs. We must prioritize maintaining a dedicated federal agency focused on promoting equity and supporting the diverse needs of learners nationwide.
