A Demand for Accountability, Not Obedience

To: Sen. Scott, Sen. Moody, Rep. Rutherford, Pres. Trump

From: A constituent in Jacksonville Beach, FL

May 15

I am writing to express my deep concern and outrage over the current trajectory of our government, particularly among those in office who continue to support or enable Donald Trump and his increasingly authoritarian agenda. Your role is not to protect a man—it is to protect our Constitution, our institutions, and the American people. And many of you are failing. We are witnessing a deliberate erosion of due process, habeas corpus, and equal protection under the law. From targeted ICE raids to the normalization of political retribution and the criminalization of dissent, the Republican Party—once the self-proclaimed defender of liberty—now routinely undermines the very freedoms it claims to protect. Where is your concern about: • A former president openly accepting gifts and income from foreign governments in violation of the Emoluments Clause? • The Department of Justice’s selective enforcement, repeated delays, and glaring conflicts of interest—including appointees with ties to Trump himself? What accountability exists when the justice system appears to shield the powerful and politically connected while punishing the vulnerable? • State and federal efforts to dismantle voting access under the guise of “election integrity,” when no widespread fraud has ever been proven? • Rising threats of political violence encouraged by rhetoric from Trump and his allies, with little to no condemnation from within your party? • The expansion of executive power beyond constitutional limits, and the continued GOP support for a man who claims he should have total immunity—even for crimes committed while in office? You cannot claim to stand for “law and order” while actively undermining the rule of law. You cannot invoke “fiscal responsibility” while championing tax policies that explode the deficit to benefit billionaires. And you certainly cannot say you support “national security” while ignoring the damage done by a leader who attempted to subvert an election and openly praises dictators. I am tired of partisan distractions. I am tired of performative outrage over books and drag shows while you stay silent as democratic norms crumble. The American people are watching. We are not fooled by the patriotic slogans and the weaponized faith. We see the cowardice. We see the complicity. Do your job. Defend democracy. Or step aside for someone who will.
