I oppose the SAVE (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility) Act, requiring citizenship documentation to register to vote. This act will actually make it more difficult for Americans to vote. For one, it targets women since women with married names will not be able to use their birth certificates because the names will not match. Importantly, not all Americans have passports since it is expensive (currently $165) and slow to get one. Americans abroad—particularly those in the military—will be profoundly affected. They cannot all travel to the USA yearly to register to vote — yearly registration of expatriates is now required.
Despite the hype, as you know, the actual incidence of voter fraud is so tiny (.001%) that this bill is wasteful and unnecessary. Americans do not need MORE obstacles to exercising their constitutional right to vote. I urge you to honor the Constitution and protect your constituents by voting NO on the SAVE Act.
