I am writing to express my deep alarm and unequivocal opposition to the recent deployment of National Guard troops in California, particularly in response to peaceful protests in support of immigrant communities. This escalation of force represents a profound abuse of executive power and a flagrant violation of constitutional rights.
Numerous federal court rulings have already found that the administration’s actions related to immigration enforcement—specifically detentions and deportations—routinely violate due process protections. Rather than complying with these rulings, the administration has doubled down, now using military force against civilians who are exercising their First Amendment rights to speak out against such abuses.
This is not only unlawful—it is horrifyingly authoritarian. The use of military personnel to suppress dissent and intimidate vulnerable communities is not the mark of a democracy. It is the tactic of regimes that disregard human rights and democratic norms.
Your role as a member of Congress demands that you act decisively. I urge you to:
• Publicly denounce the deployment of the National Guard against civilians in California and elsewhere.
• Support and introduce legislation to block the use of federal or state military forces against lawful protest or civil resistance.
• Demand oversight and accountability for executive agencies that continue to violate constitutional protections, especially in the context of immigration enforcement.
• Use all available legislative tools to prevent further misuse of federal resources in ways that threaten the civil liberties of Americans.
This administration is now an active threat to the rights and freedoms of every individual in this country. We look to you for leadership in this critical moment. Please stand on the right side of history—and the law
