Our taxes were illegally used to pay for ads, do something

To: Sen. Cruz, Rep. Hunt, Sen. Cornyn

From: A constituent in Houston, TX

September 28

I am writing as your constituent to express my disappointment over recent reporting by the Associated Press detailing the administration’s use of public taxpayer funds to finance campaign-style television commercials featuring President Donald Trump. These broadcasts carry the disclaimer “Paid for by the U.S. Government,” yet they promote partisan political messaging and self-praise ahead of upcoming elections. Labeling these spots as routine public service announcements does not disguise what they truly are: political self-promotion subsidized by the American public. Using tax dollars in this manner violates federal anti-propaganda laws and statutes restricting the use of appropriated funds for partisan political activity. Under Article I of the United States Constitution, Congress holds the exclusive Power of the Purse and the duty to hold the executive branch accountable. Allowing the executive to divert appropriated public funds into political messaging is a direct assault on the separation of powers and the rule of law. Inaction in the face of this abuse is complicity. The American people are watching, and we see lawmakers enabling actions that violate federal statutes and the spirit of the Constitution. You took an oath to protect the public trust, not to permit the misuse of public coffers for political gain. I urge you to take immediate action: Halt the ads, publicly demand an immediate end to this taxpayer-funded broadcast campaign. Launch a Formal Inquiry to direct relevant oversight committees to investigate which appropriations funded these ad buys, which officials approved them, and the total cost to taxpayers. Enforce consequences for once... You must refer any violations of federal spending laws to the Government Accountability Office and the Department of Justice, and pursue all available legislative remedies to hold responsible officials accountable. Taxpayers should never be forced to underwrite an elected official’s political promotion. I expect you to uphold your oath of office and exercise rigorous oversight. I look forward to your prompt response outlining the steps you are taking to address this matter. Otherwise, I will join the ever-growing effort to kick all Trump enablers out of office. Being a Republican used to mean something positive, you are complicit in destroying the party and the country. Wake the hell up!
