S.B. 1205: Punishing Children, Hurting Texas—Reject This Cruelty
To: Gov. Abbott, Rep. Dean, Lt. Gov. Patrick, Sen. Hughes
From: A constituent in Kilgore, TX
March 13
I am writing to strongly oppose Senate Bill 1205, which seeks to require undocumented students to pay tuition for public education in Texas. This bill is not just misguided—it is a direct attack on children and an insult to the fundamental principles of fairness and equal opportunity. Property Taxes Fund Public Schools—Undocumented Families Already Contribute Public education is funded largely by property taxes, which are paid by both homeowners and renters alike. Whether a family owns a home or rents, they are contributing to the school system just like everyone else. Forcing undocumented students to pay tuition is nothing more than double taxation, penalizing families who are already paying their fair share. Punishing Children for Political Points This bill does not target criminals or bad actors—it targets innocent children, many of whom have grown up in Texas and consider this state their home. Education is a basic right, not a privilege reserved only for those with legal paperwork. Denying children access to schooling or forcing their families to pay unaffordable tuition is cruel, unjust, and completely out of line with Texas values. The Economic and Social Consequences Will Harm Us All Education is the foundation of a strong economy. By making it harder for children to get an education, S.B. 1205 will create a less educated workforce, leading to lower earnings, reduced tax revenue, and greater dependence on social services in the future. This is not just an attack on immigrants—it is an attack on Texas’s economic stability and future prosperity. The long-term consequences will be devastating. This bill would force many families to pull their children out of school, leading to higher dropout rates, increased poverty, and greater social instability. Texas already faces challenges in funding and maintaining strong schools—why would we make it even harder for children to learn and contribute to society? Reject S.B. 1205—Protect Texas’s Future Punishing children for circumstances beyond their control is not leadership—it is cruelty. This bill does not save taxpayers money, nor does it help Texas grow stronger. It only hurts families, weakens communities, and damages our economy in the long run. I urge you to reject S.B. 1205 and stand up for all children in Texas—because when we invest in education, we invest in the future of our state.
