I am writing to express my deep concern about the current state of public education in Arizona and to urge you to take a stand in defending our public schools. As you know, public schools are the backbone of our education system, serving the majority of students in our state, including those from diverse and underserved communities.
Arizona’s public schools educate approximately 1.15 million students, with nearly 15% of them receiving vital support through the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). These schools are not just institutions; they are lifelines for families who rely on them for quality education, special services, and community support.
However, the increasing emphasis on school choice programs, such as vouchers and charter schools, is diverting critical funding away from public schools. While these programs may offer options for some families, they often leave public schools struggling to maintain essential services and infrastructure. This is particularly concerning in Arizona, where public schools already face challenges such as teacher shortages, outdated facilities, and limited resources.
The appointment of Linda McMahon as Secretary of Education has further heightened my concerns. While her business acumen is notable, her lack of experience in education policy raises questions about her ability to address the complexities of our education system. Public education requires leadership that understands the unique challenges faced by students, teachers, and administrators—not just from a managerial perspective but from an educational one.
I urge you to advocate for policies that prioritize the funding and support of public schools in Arizona. This includes opposing measures that disproportionately benefit private and charter schools at the expense of public education. Our children deserve equitable access to quality education, regardless of their zip code or socioeconomic status.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I trust that you will continue to champion the needs of Arizona’s students and families.
