Vote to defund ICE entirely and shut down every detention facility it operates. The agency's plan to house migrant children and families at England Airpark in Louisiana, one of the most PFAS-contaminated sites in the United States, makes clear that ICE cannot be reformed.
England Airpark has recorded groundwater PFAS levels of 41 million parts per trillion, which is 575,000 times higher than federal drinking water limits. The site also contains TCE, volatile organic compounds, and asbestos in the barracks. PFAS are forever chemicals linked to cancer, kidney disease, liver problems, immune disorders, and birth defects. Children are especially vulnerable because of their smaller body size. The contamination comes from firefighting foam and burn pits where the military incinerated toxic waste, and these chemicals easily move through soil into air. No testing of soil or air is currently happening at the site.
This facility would confine children and families in converted military barracks next to a runway for deportation flights. The property is legally restricted to industrial use only, yet ICE plans to house people there. Federal cleanup hasn't even begun.
Defund ICE completely. No agency that would expose children to these conditions deserves to exist.
