I am writing to express my alarm over Elon Musk’s stewardship of the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which has become a dangerous platform for spreading misinformation, inciting violence, and undermining democratic processes both in the U.S. and abroad.
Recently, falsehoods spread on X have fueled racial unrest in the UK, while Musk himself has echoed divisive rhetoric that further destabilizes society. This misuse of a public platform is not just reckless but poses a real threat to public safety and democratic integrity. In the U.S., Musk’s platform has been a vehicle for election-related disinformation, eroding trust in our democratic institutions.
Despite clear calls for action from state officials and international bodies, Musk has continued to neglect his responsibility to prevent harm. His refusal to moderate dangerous content and his combative response to legitimate concerns make it clear that he is prioritizing his own interests over the public good.
It is imperative that our government takes decisive action. I urge you to support measures by the Federal Trade Commission to hold Musk accountable for allowing harmful misinformation to proliferate on his platform. Furthermore, the U.S. government must reconsider its contracts with Musk’s companies, especially given his erratic behavior and growing monopoly in critical sectors like space exploration and telecommunications.
We cannot afford to allow one individual’s irresponsibility to endanger our national security and democratic values. I urge you to take the necessary steps to protect the public from the harms posed by Elon Musk’s actions.
Thank you for your attention to this critical issue.
