Congress Must Act: War Powers Resolution and the Iran Conflict

To: Sen. Schumer, Rep. Morelle, Sen. Gillibrand

From: A constituent in Rochester, NY

April 7

I am writing as your constituent to ask you to act now, not later. This morning, President Trump posted on Truth Social: “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.” Legal scholars, United Nations officials, and international law experts have stated publicly that threatening and targeting civilian infrastructure constitutes a war crime. The French Foreign Minister said the same. The UN Secretary-General called the threats deeply troubling. This is not hyperbole from critics. These are his own words, and they describe an intent to destroy civilian populations. I am asking you to do the following: publicly call on the Vice President and Cabinet to fulfill their constitutional duty under Section 4 of the 25th Amendment, and to make clear that Congress will act swiftly if that process is initiated. I am also asking you to support any legislation that would require congressional authorization before further escalation against Iran. The Constitution exists for moments like this. Please use it.
