Urgent Plea for Diplomatic Resolution and De-escalation with Iran

To: Sen. Wyden, Rep. Bonamici, Sen. Merkley

From: A verified voter in Portland, OR

April 11

I am writing to you today as a deeply concerned constituent to urge you to use your platform and vote to oppose any further escalation of military conflict with Iran. With the current two-week ceasefire announced on April 7, we have a critical, narrow window to pivot toward a lasting diplomatic settlement in Islamabad rather than returning to a devastating war of choice. The military operations that began in February have already demonstrated the staggering costs of this conflict. Beyond the immediate humanitarian toll, a full-scale war with Iran risks a "strategic overextension" that the United States cannot afford. Iran’s geography and population of over 90 million make a conventional victory nearly impossible without a massive, multi-year ground commitment that would further drain our national resources and cost countless American lives.  Furthermore, the economic consequences are already being felt globally. The instability in the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on regional energy infrastructure have caused oil prices to surge, threatening our domestic economic stability. Continuing this path risks a protracted war of attrition that will only further isolate the U.S. and empower asymmetric threats across the Middle East.  History has shown that regime change through foreign intervention rarely leads to the stability or democracy we envision. Instead, it often leaves a power vacuum filled by even more radical elements. The Iranian people's future must be determined by themselves, not through external bombardment that unifies the population against a common foreign adversary. I urge you to support the current ceasefire and advocate for a "grand bargain" that addresses nuclear enrichment and regional security through rigorous diplomacy. Please prioritize the safety of our service members and the stability of the global economy by choosing the path of peace.
