I am writing as a deeply concerned constituent regarding recent incidents of gross misconduct by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. In Portland, witnesses reported that ICE officers dragged a blind man across the street during an enforcement operation, showing shocking disregard for his disability and human dignity. Equally disturbing are reports that Hispanic teenagers—who are U.S. citizens—were detained and questioned by ICE officers on their way to school.
These events reflect a pattern of racial profiling, excessive force, and disregard for civil rights that should alarm anyone who believes in equal protection under the law. When officers tasked with upholding federal statutes instead terrorize vulnerable people and citizens alike, it signals that ICE has strayed far from its intended purpose.
I urge you to demand immediate federal investigation into these incidents, ensure those responsible are held accountable, and support legislation that restores lawful oversight to ICE operations. Congress must prohibit ICE from conducting street-level detentions that lack probable cause, mandate disability and civil rights training, and strengthen community protections against unauthorized enforcement actions.
The American public deserves to know that our government is not tolerating abuse under the guise of immigration enforcement. Respect, due process, and humanity must be the standard—not the exception.
