Opposing Section 230 Reform/Sunsetting

To: Sen. Schiff, Rep. Whitesides, Sen. Padilla

From: A constituent in Canyon Country, CA

March 5

I am writing to urge you to oppose any legislation that would reform, weaken, or sunset Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Section 230 is fundamental to the internet as we know it. It allows online platforms to moderate content, remove illegal material, and protect users without facing liability for every post. Without this protection, platforms would either shut down user-generated content entirely or face crippling lawsuits. Weakening Section 230 would: - Force smaller platforms and startups offline due to legal costs - Reduce content moderation, making the internet less safe - Concentrate power among only the largest tech companies - Harm free speech by making platforms overly cautious about hosting any user content I urge you to reject proposals that would sunset or substantially reform Section 230. A healthy internet depends on this crucial protection.
