Demand divestment from Trump's conflicted business interests

To: Sen. King, Sen. Collins, Rep. Pingree

From: A constituent in Damariscotta, ME

May 15

The conflicts of interest posed by President Trump's business dealings across the Middle East are deeply concerning. While promoting American interests abroad, he is simultaneously benefiting his private company through lucrative real estate projects financed by nations like Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. This unethical entanglement of personal profits with foreign policy undermines the integrity of the presidency. The notion that the President can simply retain ownership of his businesses and have his sons run them is a flagrant ethics violation. There must be a complete divestment from his private corporate interests to eliminate any semblance of corruption or misconduct. The American people deserve to know that their president is working solely for their benefit, not lining his own pockets through transactions with foreign governments. The recent billion-dollar gift of a jet from Qatar is one glaring example that creates an unacceptable conflict. Such an extravagant present could be viewed as a quid pro quo influencing the president's dealings with that nation. This severe breach demands Congressional oversight and a full accounting to the public. No president should be allowed to so brazenly profit from the office they hold. I urge you to take immediate action through investigations and legislative remedies to put an end to this gross ethical lapse. Unchecked, it will continue eroding faith in our democratic institutions.
