Keep waste emissions charge to reduce methane pollution

To: Rep. Tonko, Sen. Schumer, Sen. Gillibrand

February 22

The waste emissions charge is a vital tool in holding large methane polluters accountable and protecting public health. As the largest industrial source of methane emissions, the oil and gas industry must take responsibility for its excessive pollution. The charge incentivizes operators to comply with EPA standards by imposing fees only on those that exceed thresholds based on industry targets and remain out of compliance. Eliminating this policy would remove an effective mechanism for reducing harmful methane waste, jeopardizing public health and climate goals. Congress should reject attempts to eliminate the waste emissions charge and instead prioritize pragmatic solutions that create jobs, enhance energy security, and mitigate the severe impacts of uncontrolled methane emissions. Maintaining this regulation demonstrates our commitment to a cleaner future and positions the United States as a leader in the emerging global gas market that values low methane intensity.
