I am writing to tell you to please cosponsor S. 4102 (117th), the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act.
The Supplemental Security Income was signed into law by President Nixon in 1972 by providing monthly income for people with disabilities and older adults. It was, at its time, the best thing that has come to helping people.
However, it’s been four decades since the passing of the law. Rent, utilities, and other personal needs have raised prices and it’s been pretty hard on some folks (both disabled and elderly). Living off of only $2k ($3k if married) is not enough to survive off of, and if going more than the average payment gets people penalized just for saving for emergencies or trying to enter the workforce.
Luckily for S. 4102, it would increase the asset limit from $2k to $10k for individuals and from $3k to $20k for married couples. This empowers people to prepare themselves for a financial emergency, going into the workforce without worrying about losing their eligibility for SSI, and doubling the limit for a married couple relative to that of a single person eliminates the marriage penalty that punishes an SSI beneficiary for getting married.
So by all means, please co-sponsor the SSI Penalty Elimination Act and talk amongst fellow Congress members about this amazing bill.
Thank you
