Oppose HB1's Giveaways to Oil Companies and Foreign Interests

To: Sen. Duckworth, Rep. Casten, Sen. Durbin

From: A constituent in Downers Grove, IL

February 21

I am writing to urge you to oppose HB1, the FEHB Protection Act of 2025, which contains provisions that prioritize corporate interests over American taxpayers and our nation's future. This legislation mandates coastal plain oil and gas lease sales in Alaska under Section 80121, effectively handing over public lands to oil companies without adequate consideration of environmental impacts or fair market value for American taxpayers. These mandated lease sales remove competitive bidding protections and give away our natural resources at potentially bargain prices while the profits flow to private corporations. Even more troubling, Section 45Q(f)(10) restricts carbon oxide sequestration credits for certain foreign entities, but the bill's overall energy provisions create loopholes that could benefit international interests at the expense of American workers and environmental protection. The expedited review process for energy projects under Section 50001 bypasses important safeguards that protect communities and ensure projects serve the public interest rather than just corporate bottom lines. Meanwhile, this same legislation increases retirement contributions for federal employees under Section 90001 and eliminates the FERS annuity supplement under Section 90002, forcing middle-class workers to pay more while getting less. It imposes new fees on immigrants seeking legal status, making it harder for families to pursue the American dream. It limits Federal Direct PLUS loans for parents trying to help their children get an education. The pattern is clear: HB1 asks working Americans to sacrifice while giving handouts to oil companies and weakening protections that ensure our resources benefit the public. This is not fiscal responsibility. This is corporate favoritism disguised as reform. I urge you to vote against HB1 and instead support legislation that puts American taxpayers and workers first, not oil company profits and special interests.
