I am writing to you today as a concerned citizen who believes deeply in the democratic values upon which this nation was founded. Since the inauguration of Donald J. Trump, I have watched with alarm as the pillars of our democracy—free and fair elections, independent institutions, checks and balances, and the freedom of speech and press—are being steadily eroded. Across the political spectrum, many Americans are beginning to recognize a pattern of authoritarian behavior that should be unacceptable in the United States. These include: The undermining of confidence in the electoral process through misinformation and baseless claims. The increasing use of executive power to bypass legislative and judicial oversight. The criminalization or intimidation of political dissent and the press. The use of government institutions to target political opponents. Efforts to suppress voter access and participation through gerrymandering, purging voter rolls, and burdensome ID laws. Authoritarianism does not announce itself with a dramatic coup—it creeps in incrementally, normalized over time, while institutions fail to respond adequately. I urge you and your colleagues, regardless of party, to recognize these warning signs and act boldly to protect the Constitution and the rights of all Americans. Congress must recommit to: Upholding and expanding voting rights. Reinforcing the independence of the judiciary. Limiting the abuse of executive power. Defending a free and critical press. Protecting the rights of whistleblowers and peaceful protestors. This is not about partisan politics—it is about the future of American democracy. History will judge our generation by whether we stood up to authoritarian threats or enabled them through silence and inaction. I urge you to lead with courage and principle.
