I am writing to express my deep concern and outrage over former President Trump's recent statements on Truth Social. His characterization of Democratic lawmakers' comments as "seditious behavior" and suggestion that it is "punishable by death" is not only grossly inappropriate but also dangerous in our current political climate.
The video posted by Democratic members of Congress who are veterans simply reminded military and intelligence personnel of their duty to refuse illegal orders. This is a fundamental principle of our democracy and a safeguard against potential abuses of power. For a former president to label this as sedition and implicitly call for violence against elected officials is a direct threat to our democratic institutions.
Trump's reposting of comments calling for these lawmakers to be hanged or indicted further inflames an already tense political atmosphere. Such rhetoric from a former president can incite violence and undermines the safety of our elected representatives. The Democratic lawmakers have rightfully sought protection from the House Sergeant at Arms and Capitol Police in response to these threats.
I urge you to publicly condemn Trump's statements and take a firm stand against this kind of dangerous rhetoric. Our democracy depends on the ability of elected officials to carry out their duties without fear of violent retribution. Trump's words are not just unacceptable; they pose a real threat to the functioning of our government and the safety of public servants.
Furthermore, I ask that you support any measures necessary to ensure the safety of all members of Congress, regardless of party affiliation. We must send a clear message that threats of violence against elected officials will not be tolerated in our society.
The Constitution that these lawmakers swore to protect is the very foundation of our nation. By reminding personnel of their duty to uphold it, even in the face of potentially illegal orders, they are fulfilling their own oaths of office. This should be commended, not condemned.
I look forward to hearing your public statement on this matter and learning what actions you plan to take to address this serious issue. Our democracy and the safety of those who serve it hang in the balance.
