I am writing as an extremely concerned U.S. citizen and fellow nurse regarding the killing of Alex Pretti, an American healthcare worker who was shot and killed by federal law enforcement despite not committing a crime or posing an imminent threat.
The use of lethal force against a U.S. citizen under these circumstances is profoundly disturbing. Even more alarming is the report that federal authorities blocked state investigators from conducting a lawful investigation into his death. This interference undermines transparency, accountability, and the public’s trust in our institutions.
State-sanctioned killing must never be normalized, and no federal agency should be allowed to obstruct an independent investigation. When one branch of government prevents accountability, it is the responsibility of other branches to intervene.
I urge Congress to demand a fully independent investigation, ensure cooperation between federal and state authorities, and review federal use-of-force policies to prevent tragedies like this from happening again.
As a nurse, my profession is grounded in preserving life and doing no harm. Justice for Alex Pretti is not only a moral obligation — it is essential to upholding the rule of law.
Thank you for your attention and action in regards to this deeply upsetting matter.
