The United States is now in a constitutional crisis with the failure of the Executive branch to make every effort to free Kilmer Abrego Garcia from an El Salvadoran concentration camp, though ordered to do so by a unanimous vote of the US Supreme Court.
72% of Americans disapprove of deporting non criminal legal residents of the United States, according to Heather Cox Richardson. The US government has admitted to mistakenly deporting Kilmer Abrego Garcia, a person in full compliance with ICE regulations, due to an “administrative oversight”. What a term to use for ruining a man’s life.
Trump’s refusal to effectuate the return of Kilmer Abrego Garcia indicates that he believes the Executive to be above the Judicial branch. His cruel removal policy smacks of fascism and dictatorship, and not of the democratic values that most Americans revere. His gaslighting the public by allowing Bukele to repeat the lie that Abrego Garcia is a violent gang member is simply unthinkable in a democratic republic, but tolerated in the world the Trump is creating. It can be stopped.
Senator Van Hollen has requested a meeting with Bukele to discuss Abrego Garcia as well as a meeting with Garcia at the gulag where he’s imprisoned. These actions are necessary to facilitate justice and increasingly Dems must take matters into their own hands when the executive branch does not follow core constitutional values. Give your full support to your colleagues who put themselves on the line to protect people and democratic values.
