I am writing as a concerned constituent to urge you to take immediate action to repeal the Alien Enemies Act, a relic of 18th-century law that has no place in a 21st-century democracy. In recent months, the current Republican administration has demonstrated a dangerous willingness to exploit this outdated statute for political and ideological purposes, putting vulnerable communities at risk and undermining the foundational principles of justice and due process. The Alien Enemies Act, originally passed in 1798, was designed for a vastly different era. While its intent may have once been to address wartime concerns, it has now become a tool for discrimination and authoritarian abuse. The vague language and expansive powers it grants to the executive branch have created a constitutional loophole—one that this administration appears disturbingly eager to exploit in order to target immigrants and stoke fear for political gain. We have already seen the horrific consequences of unchecked executive authority: the erosion of civil liberties, the scapegoating of entire communities, and the weaponization of immigration policy. If Congress fails to act, history will not be kind to those who allowed this law to remain in place while it was used to commit further injustices. I urge you, as a representative of the people and as a guardian of our Constitution, to support and advocate for the full repeal of the Alien Enemies Act. Congress has both the authority and the responsibility to prevent further abuse. Repealing this statute is not only a matter of policy, it is a moral imperative.
