An Open Letter
To: Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters, Rep. Walberg
From: A constituent in Berrien Springs, MI
November 20
I am writing with a sense of urgency and moral clarity I have never felt so strongly in my lifetime. Our country is standing at the edge of a dangerous precipice, and the responsibility to pull us back from it now rests squarely on your shoulders. This moment will be remembered in American history, and the question that will follow each of your names is simple: What did you do when the Constitution was under direct attack? When an amoral leader led us astray and sought to persecute, attack, silence, and diminish all opposition? Recent events — including the President of the United States publicly accusing Democratic lawmakers of “sedition punishable by death” for urging members of the military to uphold the Constitution — represent a line that no leader in a free nation may ever cross. These are not policy disagreements. These are not partisan disputes. This is an escalation into authoritarian rhetoric that has real consequences for real people and for the future of our democracy. The pattern is unmistakable. The threat is undeniable. The danger is real. This is not the first time a president has used violent language toward political opponents. We know our history. In 1866, President Andrew Johnson called his congressional critics traitors and said they deserved to be hanged. Voters were so repelled by the violence of his words that they gave Congress a supermajority strong enough to secure the Fourteenth Amendment. Our nation grew stronger because leaders chose courage over appeasement. We are living through a moment just as consequential — perhaps more so. But the difference is: now you have the power to stop it. And you must. You swore to it. Every one of you took an oath — not to a man, not to a party, not to an ideology, but to the Constitution of the United States. That oath is not symbolic. It is binding. It is sacred. And it demands action when the republic itself is endangered. This is one of those moments. A president who uses the power of his office to target political opponents, normalize violence, undermine elections, threaten lawmakers, and encourage the public to view his critics as enemies of the state is a president who is unfit to lead. These are not differences in ideology — they are violations of democratic norms and moral boundaries that no civilized society can tolerate. We cannot allow our institutions to be eroded by intimidation. We cannot allow fear to replace the rule of law. We cannot allow any leader to place themselves above constitutional accountability. You know this. Your conscience knows this. Your oath knows this. Regardless of party, regardless of political pressure, regardless of personal cost, you have a duty to respond decisively. The time for caution has passed. The time for waiting “one more news cycle” has passed. The time for hoping someone else will act has passed. The United States needs you to act NOW. I urge you, with all sincerity and resolve, to take immediate steps to defend the Constitution and protect this nation. Call for accountability. Initiate formal proceedings. Support articles of impeachment if necessary. Draw a clear, unambiguous line that violence, authoritarian rhetoric, and threats against members of Congress (the press, or the public) are not — and never will be — acceptable in the United States of America. The world is watching. History is watching. Your constituents are watching. If you choose courage, you will be remembered as a defender of our democracy. If you choose silence, you will be remembered as someone who allowed harm to take root. There is still time to do what is right. But that window is closing quickly. Please — stand up. Speak out. Protect us. Protect the Constitution. Protect the country we all love. Please band together, each elected official, to do what is right (and it is my opinion that in this case, what is right is impeachment).
