Vote against the Kids Online Safety Act. Despite its name, KOSA would not make children safer — it would expose the most vulnerable kids to real harm. The bill's "duty of care" provision covers personalized recommendation systems, which means the FTC could pressure platforms to filter out content on LGBTQ+ issues and abortion by claiming that algorithmically surfacing that content "causes" anxiety or depression. That is the same rhetorical playbook already used to ban inclusive books and block gender-affirming healthcare across multiple states. Dozens of LGBTQ+ and civil rights organizations oppose this bill for good reason. Existing content filters already disproportionately suppress content from marginalized creators. KOSA would accelerate that discrimination. The expanded age verification and parental monitoring tools also put young people fleeing domestic abuse at direct risk. If the goal is protecting kids from Big Tech, the answer is a strong federal data privacy law — not legislation that hands censorship tools to the same rightwing attorneys general who are already targeting trans youth.
