Please join Senator King to support the bipartisan bill that will restore TPS to Haitians. You've written in the past about wanting equal dignity for all it but your words and actions as a legislator are falling short. Read what ILAP Maine says: "ILAP grieves the tragic death of Pierre Damas Bel, a 20-year-old young man and Haitian Temporary Protected Status holder from Ohio, who became despondent and took his own life after ICE shackled him with an ankle monitor. Pierre was a soccer player, active in the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC), and a freshman college student at Wright State University who dreamed of becoming a neurosurgeon. Despite the ongoing life-threatening conditions in Haiti, the administration terminated Temporary Protected Status in July. The unjustified and needless decision put 350,000 people at risk of deportation and stripped them out of the workforce, including hundreds of people in Maine. Before his death, Pierre wrote that the U.S. government's treatment of him left him "carrying a feeling of shame and humiliation that I never imagined I would experience."" ICE and Trump policies are causing deaths; the agents have murdered with impunity, even in Maine. People are detained who should not be; detainees are subject to unacceptable conditions, deprived medical treatment and given rotten food. All while private contractors profit. By now more people are in ICE detention than were ever in Hitler's concentration camps. Start to undo this. Start by restoring TPS to Haitians. Then use your role as appropriations chair to rein in ICE.
