Protect Anti-AI Advocacy&Tech Critics Weaponized Federal Terror Designations

To: Rep. Bergman, Sen. Slotkin, Sen. Peters

From: A constituent in Beulah, MI

May 27

I am writing to demand explicit legislative protections for citizens, workers, and researchers who speak out against the unchecked expansion of Artificial Intelligence. There is a deeply alarming trend within the federal government and current executive directives to expand "domestic terrorism" and "extremism" monitoring to target non-violent, ideological dissent—specifically viewpoints that are critical of corporate technology, automation, and AI. Advocating for AI safety, protesting the massive environmental toll of data centers, and defending human labor from corporate algorithmic replacement are completely protected forms of First Amendment speech. Labeling anti-AI activists, labor organizers, or tech critics as "domestic extremists" is an authoritarian abuse of power designed to shield trillion-dollar tech monopolies from public accountability and democratic oversight. I urge you to introduce and sponsor legislation that establishes the following civil liberty protections: 1 Ban Terror Designations for Anti-AI Speech: Explicitly prohibit the Department of Justice, the FBI, and the Department of Homeland Security from utilizing federal "domestic terrorism" or "counter-terrorism" funds to investigate, track, or monitor individuals or groups based on their criticisms of AI, technology expansion, or automation. 2 Defend Public Dissent Against Corporate Tech Infrastructure: Mandate strict statutory guardrails ensuring that peaceful protests, boycotts, or public campaigns targeting private AI infrastructure or corporate tech boards cannot be classified as national security threats or upgraded to federal felony charges. 3 Protect Whistleblowers and Tech Oversight Groups: Enact robust legal shields for technology researchers, whistleblowers, and civil society groups, ensuring they are protected from federal surveillance and financial targeting by the IRS or federal law enforcement. Criticizing technology is a fundamental right, not a national security emergency. I expect you to act immediately to defend the First Amendment and ensure federal policing is never used as a private security force for the tech industry.
