I am writing to urge you to immediately initiate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump for his egregious abuse of power in filing a $10 billion lawsuit against the Internal Revenue Service and Treasury Department while serving as President of the United States.
This lawsuit, filed in Florida federal court on Thursday, represents an unprecedented conflict of interest and constitutional violation. President Trump is using his position to pursue personal financial gain against the very agencies he oversees as chief executive. The suit alleges damages from the 2018 to 2020 leak of his tax information by former IRS contractor Charles Edward Littlejohn, who was sentenced to five years in prison in 2024 after pleading guilty.
While the leak violated IRS Code 6103, a strict federal confidentiality law, Trump's response as sitting president is fundamentally inappropriate. He cannot simultaneously serve as the nation's chief law enforcement officer while suing federal agencies for $10 billion in personal damages. This creates an untenable situation where the president has direct financial interest in undermining agencies under his authority.
The lawsuit claims the disclosures harmed Trump's support among voters in the 2020 presidential election and caused reputational damage. However, using the presidency to seek massive financial compensation for political and personal grievances violates the constitutional principle that no person is above the law and that presidents must serve the public interest, not their own financial interests.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has already taken appropriate action by cutting contracts with Booz Allen Hamilton, Littlejohn's employer, for failing to implement adequate safeguards. The criminal justice system has also functioned properly with Littlejohn's imprisonment. Trump's lawsuit represents an abuse of executive power that demands immediate accountability.
I urge you to support articles of impeachment and vote for removal. This conduct is incompatible with the duties of the presidency.
