I’m a voter who is very worried about climate change and the impacts it will have on ALL of our children’s future.   It has been deeply alarming to see the Trump administration offer payouts to energy companies that agree to stop their offshore wind projects and invest in fossil fuel development. These deals are not only legally dubious, but a blatant misuse of taxpayer dollars. I urge you to ensure that they are fully investigated and that the administration is held accountable based on the results. As you know, TotalEnergies has agreed to cancel two of their projects in exchange for nearly $1 billion. Two other companies will shut down Bluepoint Wind and Golden State Wind for a total payout of approximately $900 million. There has been no litigation involved with any of these companies, but the Trump administration is planning to pay both with the Judgement Fund, which is used exclusively for court-ordered settlements and can be accessed without congressional approval. They’re treating it as a pool of money they can freely use to pay companies that agree to their terms, which sets a dangerous precedent for the future. Beyond that, Reps. Huffman and Raskin have identified several other unlawful and unconstitutional aspects of the TotalEnergies deal, which are fully outlined in their letter to the company’s CEO: https://democrats-naturalresources.house.gov/imo/media/doc/2026-04-28_jh_jbr_to_totalenergies_re_settlement.pdf It’s clear that we need to fully investigate these payouts and enact measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Please keep the pressure on, and do not let this issue fall by the wayside. Thanks.
