End Unchecked Executive War-Making Before it Escalates

To: Rep. Pingree, Sen. King, Sen. Collins

From: A constituent in South Portland, ME

January 8

I am writing to demand immediate action to stop the President’s unilateral and illegal expansion of U.S. military force abroad.   I am asking you to do the following without delay:   1. Publicly co-sponsor and vote for a binding War Powers Resolution prohibiting any U.S. military action—overt or covert—against Venezuela, Colombia, Greenland, Canada, or any other country without explicit congressional authorization.  2. Force a recorded floor debate and vote, so members are on the record about whether they support unilateral wars and attacks on allies.  3. Oppose any funding, logistical support, intelligence sharing, or operational authority for these actions absent congressional approval.   The President has already demonstrated a willingness to bypass Congress. Rhetoric about expanding these actions to additional countries—including allies—is not theoretical. Congress’s failure to act decisively now invites escalation.   While some members have voiced concern or filed resolutions, no binding action has passed. Inaction is not neutral—it is acquiescence. Meanwhile, Republican leadership continues to downplay or defend actions that fall squarely under Congress’s constitutional authority.   So I ask you directly:   - Do you support committing U.S. forces to occupy or run foreign countries without congressional approval?  - Do you support attacking allies and launching another open-ended war without a vote of Congress?   The Constitution is explicit: Congress decides when the nation goes to war.  Silence at this moment is consent to executive overreach.   I expect you to act.
