Demand Immediate End to ICE Operations Violating Due Process in Minnesota
To: Sen. Peters, Rep. Scholten, Sen. Slotkin
From: A constituent in Grand Rapids, MI
January 23
I am writing to demand immediate action to halt ICE operations in Minnesota that are violating constitutional rights and terrorizing entire communities. What is happening in Minneapolis represents a fundamental breakdown of due process and the rule of law that requires urgent intervention. On February 2025, ICE agents shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Good, a US citizen and mother. An officer was later witnessed kicking over candles at her memorial. Multiple children as young as 5 years old have been detained, including a boy named Liam who was allegedly used as bait to capture his mother. On-the-ground journalists report witnessing agents detaining people on the street and in cars simply for being unable to produce immediate proof of citizenship. This is not immigration enforcement. This is state-sponsored terror. The community impact is devastating and measurable. Schools have moved to virtual learning due to safety concerns. Pregnant women are too scared to attend prenatal appointments at hospitals where ICE agents are stationed. Healthcare providers now offer virtual prenatal checkups because patients fear leaving their homes. Daycare workers report many children staying home out of fear. Residents are delivering food and supplies to neighbors too frightened to go outside. People speaking Spanish in public are being detained. ICE agents are reportedly stationed at hospitals, schools, Target stores, and Menards. Agents have received a temporary lift in restrictions that previously banned them from pepper-spraying protesters. The president is threatening to invoke the Insurrection Act, which would allow armed forces to carry out arrests and searches, dramatically expanding military involvement in immigration enforcement. As TheFeministLawyer, a Minnesota-based advocate, stated directly: "Immigration enforcement doesn't just operate through arrests; it operates through fear. And when enforcement practices deter people from accessing education, healthcare, and basic stability, the harm extends beyond individuals to entire communities, raising serious public health and legal concerns and serving as a warning sign not just for immigrants, but for our constitutional democracy as a whole." I demand you take immediate action to stop these operations, ensure due process for all detainees, investigate the killing of Renee Good, secure the release of children detained without proper legal proceedings, and prohibit ICE presence at schools and hospitals. Constitutional rights apply to everyone on US soil, and what is happening in Minnesota violates the most basic principles of justice and human dignity.
