I am writing to urge you to address a critical flaw in the Kids Internet and Digital Safety Act (KIDS Act / H.R. 7757). While protecting minor privacy is essential, platforms are using lazy, blanket age blocks to completely exclude young users. To access tools needed for school, communication, and transportation, minors are forced to lie about their birth years. Once they enter a fake adult birth year, platforms strip away safety filters, exposing them to adult servers and aggressive data harvesting. This lazy age discrimination locks kids out of essential utilities like weather apps, forces parents to falsify data for safe teen ride-shares, and forces schools to ban vital educational tools. The KIDS Act must prohibit platforms from banning users under 18 through blanket age discrimination. Instead, it must mandate functional, secure Verifiable Parental Consent pathways that allow minors to access the digital world within safe, non-tracking sandboxes.
