Ban Deceptive AI-Generated Ads on Social Media

To: Sen. Schiff, Sen. Padilla, Pres. Trump, Rep. Friedman

From: A constituent in Los Angeles, CA

July 26

Pass legislation requiring mandatory disclosure labels on AI-generated advertisements — and impose real penalties on platforms that allow deceptive AI content to run unchecked. Right now, scammers are flooding Instagram and TikTok with AI-generated videos designed to manipulate viewers emotionally and drive purchases, with zero disclosure that the content is artificial. Meta and TikTok only removed accounts after a journalist asked questions. That's not accountability — that's damage control. Platforms cannot be trusted to self-regulate. Voluntary removal after press inquiries is not a policy. Congress needs to set a clear standard: any AI-generated content used in advertising must be labeled, and platforms that fail to enforce it face meaningful fines. Consumers deserve to know when they're being sold to by a machine pretending to be a person. This is a straightforward consumer protection issue, and the technology to detect and label this content already exists.
