I am a constituent and I am writing to respectfully urge you to oppose H.R. 7661.
I am deeply concerned that this legislation would contribute to censorship and undermine Americans’ freedom to read and access information. The freedom to seek out ideas, literature, and knowledge without government interference is a cornerstone of a free society. Policies that restrict access to books or information—especially based on broad or vague standards—risk limiting intellectual freedom for both adults and young people.
While I strongly support protecting children from genuine harm, I am not convinced that H.R. 7661 effectively accomplishes that goal. Instead, it appears to create sweeping limitations that could suppress lawful, valuable, and educational materials. Parents already have the primary role and responsibility in guiding their children’s reading and media choices. Government overreach in this area risks substituting broad mandates for parental judgment and local decision-making.
Moreover, restricting access to information does not address the root causes of the concerns often cited in support of such legislation. Rather than imposing blanket limitations, Congress should focus on solutions that empower families, strengthen digital literacy, and provide appropriate tools without infringing on constitutional freedoms.
The right to read and to access diverse viewpoints is fundamental to our democracy. I respectfully ask that you vote NO on H.R. 7661 and instead support policies that both protect children and uphold the First Amendment rights of all Americans.
Thank you for your time and for representing our community. I would appreciate hearing your position on this bill.
