The proposed legislation grants the Treasury Secretary unchecked power to unilaterally revoke the tax-exempt status of any nonprofit organization deemed a "terrorist supporting organization," without due process or providing evidence. This is an alarming overreach that jeopardizes free speech and dissent. Revoking an organization's nonprofit status would cripple its ability to operate and seek donations, essentially shuttering its operations at the whim of the administration. With the stated desire for "revenge" against political opponents, this law enables the targeted suppression of advocacy groups, human rights organizations, pro-choice supporters, environmentalists, and others. It undermines constitutional protections and chills activism. I urge you to reject this bill that weaponizes governmental powers against civil society. We must safeguard democratic freedoms and the vital role nonprofits play.
