In the wake of the devastating mass shooting at a Catholic school in Minneapolis on August 27, 2025, I urge you to take immediate action to pass reasonable gun control laws. This horrific act of domestic terrorism, which claimed the lives of two innocent children and injured seventeen others, underscores the critical need for stronger measures to prevent such tragedies.
The attack, carried out by Robin Westman during a morning Mass, has been rightly condemned by Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara as an act of "sheer cruelty" and "cowardice." The fact that this occurred in a place of worship, targeting vulnerable children, makes it all the more heartbreaking. The bravery of 10-year-old Weston Halsne's friend Victor, who shielded him from gunfire and was shot in the back, illustrates the unimaginable situations our children face due to gun violence.
As federal officials investigate this as an act of domestic terrorism motivated by hatred against Catholics, it's clear that we must address both the accessibility of firearms and the rise of extremism. The incident has sparked crucial discussions about school safety, with reports indicating that Minnesota school leaders had previously requested help with security measures from Governor Tim Walz.
I implore you to act swiftly in drafting and supporting legislation that implements reasonable gun control measures. These should include comprehensive background checks, restrictions on high-capacity magazines, and improved mental health screening for gun purchasers. Additionally, we need increased funding for school security measures and programs to combat extremism and hate crimes.
The lowering of American flags to half-staff until August 31 by President Donald Trump is a somber reminder of the lives lost. However, symbolic gestures are not enough. We need concrete action to prevent future tragedies. As your constituent, I ask that you make this a top priority in the upcoming legislative session. Our children's lives and the safety of our communities depend on your leadership in this critical moment.
