I am writing to urge you to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump for his threats to take military action against Greenland, a territory of Denmark and our NATO ally. Rep. Don Bacon of Nebraska has already stated that such military action could lead to impeachment, calling Trump's Greenland obsession "the dumbest thing I've ever heard."
Trump's threats represent an unprecedented assault on the NATO alliance that has secured American interests for 75 years. Sen. Mitch McConnell accurately described potential military action against Greenland as "an unprecedented act of strategic self-harm" that risks "incinerating" NATO alliances. When a president threatens military force against the sovereign territory of a treaty ally, he violates his oath to faithfully execute the laws, including our NATO treaty obligations.
The Constitution grants Congress alone the power to declare war. Trump's threats bypass this constitutional requirement and demonstrate contempt for congressional authority. Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina predicts bipartisan support for a war powers resolution with sufficient votes to override a presidential veto, indicating broad recognition that Trump has exceeded his authority.
Impeachment exists precisely for situations where a president threatens actions that would fundamentally damage American security and constitutional order. Waiting until after military action begins would be too late. The damage to our alliances, our credibility, and our national security would already be done.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski emphasized that "Greenland needs to be viewed as our ally, not as an asset." Trump's refusal to accept this basic principle, combined with his willingness to threaten force against a democratic ally, demonstrates unfitness for office. I urge you to support articles of impeachment immediately, before these threats escalate into actions that cannot be undone. Our NATO alliance and constitutional system depend on congressional action now.
