Oppose Markwayne Mullin's Confirmation as Secretary of Homeland Security

To: Sen. Peters, Sen. Slotkin

From: A constituent in Rockford, MI

March 7

I am writing to urge you to oppose the confirmation of Senator Markwayne Mullin as Secretary of Homeland Security. This appointment raises serious concerns about qualifications, conflicts of interest, and the direction of an agency that affects millions of Americans. Senator Mullin currently serves on the Senate Appropriations Committee, where he helps negotiate federal funding for the Department of Homeland Security. DHS has been operating without annual appropriations funding since February 14, creating an urgent funding crisis. Confirming someone who has been directly involved in these stalled negotiations to lead the agency presents a troubling conflict of interest and raises questions about whether political maneuvering has taken precedence over the department's operational needs. Beyond the immediate conflict, Mullin's background does not demonstrate the expertise required to lead an agency with over 260,000 employees responsible for cybersecurity, disaster response, immigration services, and national security. His professional experience includes plumbing, construction, talk radio, and mixed martial arts. While his decade in Congress shows public service commitment, DHS requires leadership with deep experience in complex emergency management, intelligence operations, and large-scale organizational administration. This appointment comes as Trump praised Mullin for his commitment to continuing the administration's immigration enforcement tactics. The previous leadership under Kristi Noem oversaw what has been described as a broad and controversial immigration crackdown. Mullin has positioned himself as a vocal defender of these same tactics, suggesting more of the same approach rather than the balanced, competent leadership DHS needs. The Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs must thoroughly examine Mullin's qualifications, his appropriations conflicts, and his vision for an agency that must serve all Americans with professionalism and expertise. I urge you to vote against this confirmation and insist on a nominee with the credentials and independence this critical position demands.
