Matt Gaetz's nomination for Attorney General poses a grave threat to the integrity of the Department of Justice and our democracy. His track record of undermining free and fair elections, promoting dangerous misinformation, and enabling violence against racial justice protestors disqualifies him from leading an institution charged with upholding civil rights and the rule of law. Gaetz voted to overturn the 2020 election results even after the deadly January 6th insurrection and has actively worked to shield those responsible from accountability. As Attorney General, he would have immense power to further erode voting rights and enable voter suppression tactics he has championed. Gaetz's open embrace of racist ideologies like the "Great Replacement Theory" signals his willingness to trample on civil liberties and due process for communities of color. Confirming such an extremist would deal a devastating blow to public trust in the DOJ and the constitutional principles it is meant to defend. I urge you to reject this reckless nomination and uphold your duty to advise and consent on nominees who will faithfully execute the laws and protect the rights of all Americans.
