I am deeply concerned by the by the bill that congressman Andy Biggs has introduced to abolish OSHA. This bill would eliminate federal workplace safety protections and have an immediate, negative impact on millions of Americans.
If enacted, this could allow employers to end breaks, not provide bathrooms, not provide water, turn off central air for office workers, force unpaid overtime, and even lock employees into the buildings where they work.
Without federal workplace protections, we risk repeating such tragedies as the 1860 Pemberton Mill Collapse, the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, or even the 2009 Deadly Dust Explosions.
Every American worker deserves a safe workplace.
I am asking you to take the following actions to ensure that our rights to workplace safety are not repealed.
1. Block US HR86 NOSHA Act Nullify Occupational Safety and Health Administration Act
2. Further work to support worker’s rights by protecting our rights to organize and actively prosecute corporations that engage in illegal, union busting tactics.
3. Update the NLRA to cover agricultural laborers and independent contractors. Further update the NLRA to remove the “white collar” exemptions for salary level and salary basis and professional exemptions.
We all deserve the right to a safe workplace and our ability to organize to protect our rights must be protected.
