Oppose FBI Funding for NSPM-7 Domestic Surveillance Center

To: Sen. Durbin, Rep. Budzinski, Sen. Duckworth

From: A constituent in Urbana, IL

April 12

Vote no on the FBI's 2027 budget request that funds the NSPM-7 Joint Mission Center. This interagency operation between the FBI, DHS, and DOJ was created by Trump in September to target what his memo defines as domestic terrorism, including "anti-Americanism, anti-capitalism, and anti-Christianity." That's not terrorism. That's political dissent. I'm not a terrorist because I protest or disagree with government policy. Neither are my neighbors. This center will criminalize constitutionally protected speech and turn federal law enforcement into a weapon against Americans exercising their First Amendment rights. The mission to "proactively identify networks" of people with certain political views is surveillance of citizens, not counterterrorism. We already know ICE is using spyware on protesters with no criminal records. The Electronic Frontier Foundation confirmed ICE hasn't ruled out deploying malware against people whose only "crime" is showing up to a demonstration. Now the FBI wants more money to expand this dragnet. Don't fund thought police. Reject this budget request and demand the administration rescind NSPM-7 entirely.
