I am calling on you, my elected representative, to stand against the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration. Not only will the tariffs drive up consumer prices dramatically, but they are also being imposed on regions that are completely uninhabited by humans such as the Heard & McDonald Islands, further wasting taxpayer dollars. The reality is that the entire American economy is dependant on imports. The majority of our clothing is made overseas, electronics and electronic components are manufactured overseas, and most of our food is imported. Rather than accepting the costs of these tariffs or moving production to the USA, companies will either raise prices or pull out of the American economy altogether, seeing it as volatile. This is because tariffs are paid by the importing company or individual, not by the exporting county. The clear result of this is America being plunged into a new Great Depression. Donald Trump does not even have authority to impose tariffs. The International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which he invoked in his executive order, authorizes him to impose sanctions or freeze assets to protect the United States from foreign threats. It does not give him authority to impose tariffs. As Congress has not signed off on these tariffs, his executive order is unlawful. Despite this, the effects of the tariffs are already being felt. The stock market is crashing, with trillions of dollars erased from the American economy overnight. History proves that if nothing is done, this will affect not just the working class, but everyone, and will certainly result in an economic crisis. With all this in mind, I call on you. If nothing is done to stop these illegal tariffs, our once-strong economy will become weaker and weaker until the United States dollar is worth nothing and the country is plunged into an economic crisis from which we may never recover. Please do something, if not for those of us who can't do anything, then for yourself, because as you have already seen, these have affected you and your investments. Thank you for your time.
