Take action NOW to curb ICE abuses & killings! Impeach Trump, Bondi, & Noem!
To: Sen. Murray, Rep. Jayapal, Sen. Cantwell
From: A constituent in Seattle, WA
February 5
Two US citizens are dead after being shot by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis. Renee Good, 37, was killed at the start of February when a federal agent shot her, with city officials stating the agent acted recklessly despite federal claims she tried to run over agents. On Saturday, Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse at the VA who had joined protests following Good's death, was fatally shot after being stopped by border agents. Video footage shows him being wrestled to the ground and then shot multiple times. These are not isolated incidents of poor judgment. Meanwhile, hidden inside private, for-profit detention centers, more than 40 people have died in ICE custody due to lack of medical care and likely abuses. These are extrajudicial killings of American citizens by federal agents operating under the direction of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Attorney General Pam Bondi. The deployment of ICE agents to cities as part of mass deportation operations has created a militarized environment where federal officers are killing citizens with impunity. The fact that abuse can happen behind closed doors by agents with zero accountability magnifies the problem. I am calling on you to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Trump, Kristi Noem, and Pam Bondi for their roles in these deaths and their flagrant abuses of federal laws and Constitutional rights. Beyond impeachment, individual ICE agents who killed Renee Good and Alex Pretti, and all detention centers staff implicated in detainee deaths, must face criminal prosecution that takes precedence of prosecution of purported immigration violations. Federal law enforcement officers do not have the authority to execute American citizens during immigration enforcement operations! The pattern of violence suggests massive and escalating systemic problems requiring immediate congressional intervention. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz has called for impartial investigations and the departure of federal forces. Federal judge has already imposed restrictions on ICE operations, ordering the immediate release of detained lawful refugees and the ability for legislators to visit detention centers to conduct oversight. This is not enough! Congress must act now to hold these officials accountable and take bold steps to curb abuses and prevent further deaths. I ask you to respond to this letter, to detail the ways you are stepping up in courage to take effective measures that will stem this country’s descent into militarized authoritarianism.
