I am writing as an educated and deeply concerned constituent who is horrified by what is happening in our country. The killing of people in our streets and the normalization of state violence represent a fundamental betrayal of the values the United States was founded upon.
The Declaration of Independence states plainly that “all men are created equal” and are endowed with “unalienable Rights,” including “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” It further declares that governments exist to secure these rights and derive “their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
Our nation was born because the British government violated these principles — through violence, abuse of power, and the denial of due process. The founders asserted that when a government becomes destructive of human rights and dignity, “it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it.” The United States was founded in opposition to unchecked state violence, not in defense of it.
I am an educated American citizen, and I am also the daughter and granddaughter of immigrants. My family’s story is inseparable from the American story. Immigrants have always helped build, sustain, and defend this nation. No human being is illegal. Dehumanizing people based on their origin or status contradicts both our Constitution and our founding moral commitments.
What we are witnessing today is not strength — it is a failure to uphold the rule of law, equal protection, and basic human dignity. It is precisely the kind of abuse of power our founders warned against.
I urge you to:
• Publicly condemn state violence and the killing of civilians
• Uphold due process and equal protection under the law
• Demand transparency, accountability, and independent investigations
• Reject policies and rhetoric that dehumanize immigrants and marginalized communities
History will remember who defended constitutional principles and who remained silent. I expect my elected officials to honor the ideals this country was founded on — not abandon them.
