If congress is going to require proof of citizenship to vote, it should first make getting the documentation easy and free for all citizens. Exercising a right should not cost anyone money. The proposed SAVE Act would require documentary proof of citizenship to vote in federal elections, disenfranchising millions of eligible voters who lack ready access to birth certificates or other accepted documents. Obtaining these records can be prohibitively expensive and burdensome, especially for marginalized communities. Congress must ensure any voter identification requirements do not create financial or practical barriers that deprive citizens of their constitutional rights. A voting system that is truly accessible to all is essential for a vibrant democracy.
