I am writing to oppose the Department of Justice's move to vacate the seditious conspiracy convictions of Oath Keepers and Proud Boys leaders involved in the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
These convictions were won through jury trials, mountains of evidence, and years of litigation. Stewart Rhodes was sentenced to 18 years in federal prison by a judge who described him as "an ongoing threat and peril to this country and to the very fabric of our democracy." Vacating these convictions would, among other consequences, restore these individuals' right to own firearms.
The lead prosecutor of the Capitol Siege unit called this action "a sad and selfish reminder that constitutional due process doesn't appear to matter," and stated plainly: "This isn't about fairness or justice."
I urge you to publicly oppose this action and stand on the side of the rule of law, the 140 officers injured that day, and the integrity of the judicial process.
