Reject SAVE Act - Protects Voter Rights, Prevents Disenfranchisement
To: Sen. Hagerty, Sen. Blackburn
From: A constituent in Chattanooga, TN
April 17
I urge you to reject the SAVE Act, as it would impose unnecessary and burdensome restrictions on the fundamental right to vote for millions of eligible American citizens. This legislation is a solution in search of a problem, as there is virtually no evidence of widespread illegal voting by non-citizens that would warrant such draconian measures. The requirement to provide original birth certificates or naturalization documents matching the name on a photo ID would disenfranchise tens of millions, including over 80% of married women who take their spouse's surname. Half of Americans lack a current passport. Voter registration drives, online registration used by 8 million voters in 2022, and mail-in registration utilized by 3 million would be severely limited or ended entirely. Rural residents, those with disabilities, and others without reliable transportation would face significant barriers to appearing in person at election offices. Ample safeguards against ineligible voting already exist, including verification protocols using federal databases. Rather than upholding election integrity, the SAVE Act constitutes an undue burden on the constitutional rights of law-abiding citizens to cast their ballots. I implore you to protect American democracy by voting against this unnecessary and harmful legislation.
