Experts wonder, "Where is the CDC?" as a hantavirus outbreak unfolds on a cruise ship. I am writing to you today because this question haunts me as a citizen who relies on our public health institutions for safety.
The recent news that the CDC has been "missing in action" while international health organizations lead the response to an outbreak involving Americans is deeply alarming. For decades, the CDC was the world leader in stopping disease. Now, experts describe the agency as a "non-player" that is "empty and vapid." When our own government agencies are silenced or delayed by political optics, our lives are put at risk.
Hantavirus is deadly, and while this specific strain may not be a pandemic threat, the agency’s sluggish response is a "sentinel event." It proves we are not prepared for the next big health crisis. We need a CDC that holds televised briefings, issues timely alerts to doctors, and acts with the transparency we were promised.
I urge you to investigate why our premier health agency has been sidelined and to push for a return to science-led, transparent leadership. We cannot afford to wait until a more contagious virus arrives to realize our frontline defense has been dismantled. Please act now to restore the CDC to its full strength
